Sustainability is a priority area of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Therefore, VU has been tracking a selection of its greenhouse gas emissions for almost two decades. VU is now ready to step up its game. Salacia Solutions is glad to be of assistance in this.

In 2003, VU started tracking its greenhouse gases. It has been focussing on scope 1 and scope 2 emissions as defined by the Greenhouse Gas protocol. These are, respectively, direct emissions from owned facilities and vehicles; and emissions from energy purchased.

However, scope 3 emissions are expected to be a significant contributor to the total greenhouse gases VU is indirectly responsible for. Scope 3 emissions occur outside of VU’s direct influence, by downstream and upstream activities. VU now wants to include scope 3 emissions. Moreover, VU wants to track its impact more consistently and frequently, in order to accelerate decision making focussed on impact reduction.

The project team of VU, VU students and Salacia Solutions will jointly take the environmental monitoring to the next level. Salacia will help VU to automate the data streams to calculate the scope 1 and 2 emissions, start monitoring the scope 3 emissions and set reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement. Thereby VU Amsterdam strives to maintain its current position amongst the top 10 most sustainable universities worldwide.

Lead ‘Sustainable VU’ Ivar Maas, who is on the project team alongside his colleague Manon Swart, says: “Sustainability is not a competition but a collaboration. Therefore, we are excited to work together with Salacia and our students in making VU more sustainable.”
